History of PUPS

Plymouth University Paediatric Society was founded in 2014 following the split of Peninsula Medicla School into Plymouth University Peninsula Medical School and University of Exeter Medical School.  With an influx of students who would now belong to the new medical school it was thought that focusing efforts centrally in Plymouth would be more beneficial.

Based on attendance at the National Medical Students Paediatric Conference in 2014 by the President of PUPS in the previous academic year, the new society aimed to create the South West Undergraduate Paediatric Conference (SWUPC).  The first conference (themed Paediatric Emergencies and Trauma) in 2015 was a huge success with great speakers from around the UK and student delegates from Plymouth, Exeter, Truro, Bristol, Cardiff and Swansea medical schools attending.

The conference will once again be held in Plymouth in 2016 in order to establish a strong reputation (themed Paediatric Life-Limiting Illnesses). The conference will then be moving around the South West from 2017 onwards.  The location of the conference from 2017 will be decided by a bidding process by interested and passionate students from each South West medical school.  The hope is to make SWUPC a large, successful and long-lasting event for years to come.
